Summary: In all the enthusiasm to get a website online, it is easy to forget the characteristics that make it easy for a search engine crawler to rank a site. When search engine optimization is done properly, the website is designed with certain physical characteristics that make it easier for a search engine crawler to “read” a website and figure out what to do with it. In this article some of those design considerations are discussed.

In all the enthusiasm to get a website online, it is easy to overlook the search engine optimization of it. When search engine optimization is done properly, the website is designed with certain physical characteristics that make it easier for a search engine crawler to “read” a website and figure out what to do with it. Here are some of the elements of good web page design that contribute to the site’s search engine optimization:

Consider the domain name in search engine optimization of your site. If you can get a domain name that has your main keywords in it then this is the best for search engine optimization of your website. For example, if your business sells green widgets, you could choose a domain name like green-widgets.com. In your page content, you focus on the keyword phrase “green widgets.” So when the search engine crawler “reads” your website, it sees the domain name and the keyword-rich content and can figure out easily how to index it. Keep in mind also that greenwidgets.com is not as effective as green-widgets.com in that the search engine crawler cannot figure out the two distinct words in greenwidgets.com whereas it can in green-widgets.com. The dash in this case acts as a word separator.

Use text in the body content of your web pages. Part of search engine optimization is making sure that your web pages are human/machine-readable ASCII text—not text embedded in Flash graphics or images. The search engine crawler can only read text.

Use the DESCRIPTION tag in your web page for search engine optimization. The description tag is found in the underlying source code of your website. It tells the search engine crawler what your site is all about and the description text gets used as the short summary for a site listed from search page results.

Use your website’s keywords to name files, directories, and images. Search engine optimization considers that the search engine crawler “reads” everything about the web page to help it determine how to classify your site in its index. So when the files, image names, and subdirectories all have your keywords included, it clues the crawler as to what your site is about. You can also use keywords in the ALT text of your images.

Think carefully before using Flash on your web pages. There is a debate over the effect of Macromedia Flash objects on web pages in search engine optimization. One side of the argument believes because the text in a Flash object is not actual machine-readable text that it cannot be optimized. The other side of the argument continues to come up with innovative ways to integrate Flash without harming search engine optimization efforts. The topic of Flash, web pages, and search engine optimization is very in-depth but if you are the type who likes to keep it simple and get your site optimized quicker then don’t worry about Flash for now.

Don’t do keyword spamming. While keyword phrases are important, too many of them can be detrimental in search engine optimization because it alerts the search engine crawler that you might be overusing the keywords to gain an unfair page ranking advantage. Your site could get penalized by the search engine for this. Stick to keyword percentages of 2 to 5% of the total content of a page.

  1. Nice tips !Thanks for posting them.

I have noticed that getting a high rank on MSN is quite easy than google and yahoo. To get a high rank on MSN one needs to fill their 60-70 % Of their words with the keyword.Backlinks doesn’t help much in case of MSN

To get a better rank in Yahoo ! Keep the keyword in the Title tag,and meta tags (BUT DONT SPAM THEM) .Also make a note that you will get a better rank if you finish the last word of the page by a keyword. This really works and give a better rank.

To get a better rank in Google backlinks is be the best way.

  2. Wow that’s a lot of great advice packed into a small space without any filler. You must be an expert at this. Thanks for all the “inside” info.

I think i’ll try to implement your tips one by one on my website and see how it goes. I was under the mistaken assumption that the more you use keywords in the page the better [keyword spamming as you say]. Damn, now i see why my site is down in the dumps despite “keyword abundance”

  4. I think the point which you stressed here about using human/machine-readable ASCII text is very important. Often, many people always overlooked on this matter thinking that flash animation will always work to enhance your website. This is in fact the opposite because the text in animation form is not readable by crawlers and thus they will just be ignored. Another important point is using the DESCRIPTION tag which can get the attention of the crawlers as well. All in all, I think these are very important tips mentioned here that should help every webmaster to avoid the mistake and pitfall of using text in flash animation form.

  6. I would definitely recommend your article here to be used as a guideline for novices intending to learn on SEO. Getting the right Domain name as what you mentioned here, would be the most important step before you start on SEO. Getting one related to your keywords and is the most searched for in search engine should be the best to make up your domain name. And yes, we should try to avoid keyword spamming as crawlers nowadays are programmed to be smarter and more sensitive to abuse so that all websites have a fair advantage.

  7. I think all these things are excellent points and should be considered carefully to get the most out of your webpage. The one point you brought up that in my opinion is the most importants is the machine readable text. I’ve seen a lot of webpages where all the consideration has been put into graphics, images, and Flash to make the page appealing and attractive, that in the end there is little to know actual text on the page. All in all this is some very valuable information for those who are able to implement it correctly. Thanks for these great tips!!

  9. Well the tips given by you are excellent ones.I have two wordpress blogs for myself. In the beginning while taking a domain itself i started thinking of SEO like looking for the keyword in the domain itself and it really helping me now to get traffic from google. And your last point is also nice where you say not to spam key words here and there as new comers are not aware so they stuff key words and ultimately get banned from google index. So all new comers must make a note of all these before entering into blogging.

  10. well SEO is the most important thing, many poeple try every trick on the cards,be it link exchange or buying traffic from few sites, but dont even think about social bookmarking & digging & stumbling the article & many of them gets into the run of getting good backlinks for a higher page rank, but , then they totally ignore the quality of their sites ,& fail to get good genuine traffic which results in bad alexa ranking’s.
urs is a good article for beginners 😀

  11. I have to admit, I am not yet well-versed with SEO but at least I have a gist about it. Yet this article has answered most of my questions about SEO and as I read it, I was able to understand the SEO ebook that I am currently reading even more! I remember when I use to write to this group, and we were asked to write and observe keyword density, and while I was reading this article, I kinda thought that what we were doing is already spamming…oh my… well needless to say.. but i thank you for this.
